What Is Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C is a virus that can infect and damage the liver. Symptoms are often not noticeable and can be mistaken for another condition. It is therefore common for the condition to remain undiagnosed until the liver has been damaged. It is usually passed through the sharing of bodily fluids.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms are not often present until the condition reaches an advanced stage (chronic hepatitis). However, one in four people display symptoms during the first six months of infection (acute hepatitis). One in five acute cases resolve spontaneously and in one in four cases the immune system will kill off the virus completely.

The symptoms of acute hepatitis include:? tiredness

• loss of appetite

• a high temperature

• stomach pain

• feeling sick

• vomiting

• yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice)

Chronic hepatitis occurs when the virus remains active in the body for many years. Symptoms can be variable and often go away and come back over the years. They include:

• flu like symptoms

• tiredness

• headaches

• feeling depressed

• short-term memory loss

• moodswings

• indigestion

• bloating

• abdominal pain

• pain in the liver
