What are B12 Injections?

General Health Videos

According to reports, Margaret Thatcher used to receive vitamin injections to sustain her whilst prime minister. Whether or not Maggie actually did receive these booster shots remains a mystery, but what is known is that B12 injections are becoming more popular.

is because celebrities such as Cheryl Cole are supposedly turning to these injections to treat hangovers or improve weight loss. What exactly is fact and what is fiction with regards to these injections?

What is Vitamin B12?

B12, otherwise known as ‘Red’ due to its colour, is a crystalline vitamin. It is known for its energy giving properties, however there are other benefits.

The B Vitamins are a series of nutrients that are needed for a healthy metabolism, the maintenance of the central nervous system and the synthesis of DNA.

People therefore think that if they inject themselves with this ‘miracle vitamin’ they will gain energy, lose weight and generally be healthier. Sound too good to be true? Well in most cases it is...

These health benefits can be experienced by someone injected with B12, but only if they are lacking the vitamin in the first place.

It is also pointless to get an injection in case your levels drop because the B12 vitamin is water-soluble. This means that the body is unable to store it and if it isn’t needed it is expelled through the urine.

So if you are experiencing fatigue or having trouble losing weight then the best course of action would be to get down to your GP and ask for advice. If you are experiencing B12 deficiency then your GP can advise you in a course of action.
