Physiotherapy treatments for arthritis

Physiotherapy to treat osteoarthritis

Physiotherapy is an important treatment in the management of osteoarthritis. This is because the main problems people suffer from with osteoarthritis are pain and stiffness. Physiotherapy is a form of treatment and exercises which can help relieve both of these problems for someone suffering with osteoarthritis.

The term arthritis literally means 'inflammation of the joints'. It comes from the Greek 'arth-' meaning 'joints' and '-itis' meaning 'inflammation'. Arthritis is a build up of pain and swelling around the joints. With osteoarthritis this inflammation is caused by degeneration inside the joint. Osteoarthritis is a very common condition. It is almost an inevitable part of the ageing process as wear and tear over the years causes the degeneration seen in osteoarthritis.

For many people with osteoarthritis it is possible to manage the symptoms, keep mobile, and live a normal life without the need for treatments like physiotherapy. However, if the pain and stiffness builds up and becomes severe, it is possible to seek additional help by consulting a doctor and visiting a physiotherapist. In most instances, physiotherapy can help people cope with the pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis.
