The first piece of advice would be to use ice and/or heat. Ice, placed on a joint wrapped in a tea towel, some frozen peas, is a great way to reduce swelling and inflammation, which helps reduce pain. Heat can be really effective as well. And sometimes, ice and heat used in combination is an excellent way. We call it ‘contrast bathing’, and it reduces inflammation on the joint. My suggestions: five minutes of frozen peas followed by a hot water bottle for twenty minutes on the joint, two to three times a day, will reduce the pain.
