There are a number of ways that you can protect yourself from HIV. One of the most important things is to know your HIV status and have a HIV Test. If you know you are HIV negative then you can take precautions to stay negative, and if you know your HIV positive then you can take precautions to make sure you don’t transmit to other people. The main thing to think about is using condoms when having either anal or vaginal sex. This is particularly true when having sex with new partners where you don’t know their HIV status.
If you are injecting drugs then it is important not to share needles, and also not to share works that can be contaminated with HIV. It is also important for pregnant women to know their HIV status. Most pregnant women in this country now have a HIV test because we can prevent transmission to child. This is only possible if we know before delivery that the mother is HIV positive.
