Wrinkles occur because when we get older our skins produces less collagen. This is the protein that keeps the skin firm and youthful.

In order to combat this loss of collagen there are many anti ageing substances that claim to turn back the hands of time. These are advertised heavily and are often purposely left unexplained to make them sound more impressive. For example, a product specially formulated with aqua and humectants is just a scientific way of saying the lotion contains water and moisturiser.

Do they actually work?

Despite this clever marketing, some products have been confirmed to reduce wrinkles. A substance called Retinol has been proven to treat ageing if used below the skin. This means that topical products containing the research supported Retinol is rendered useless.1

Another shrewd sales technique is to not mention the exact quantity of the ‘miracle’ chemicals in them. This means that there could be a miniscule amount of Retinol that would not be enough to make a difference to your appearance.

Be weary of the impressive sounding scientific terms and stick to old-fashioned moisturiser and sunscreen. Moisturiser is known to reduce the appearance of wrinkles as the moisture absorbed plumps up the skin. Sunscreen also prevents age spots and reduces the risk of skin cancer.
